Active Release Therapy at Hemberger Structural Integration
Ed Hemberger, LMT
Hemberger Structural Integration is pleased to offer Active Release Therapy (ART) as part of its standard care services. “When muscles and other soft tissues are overused, pulls, tears, muscle spasms or contractures may occur. The body responds by producing scar tissue which restricts healthy tissues, preventing them from moving freely,” explains Ed Hemberger, LMT. “As scar tissue builds, muscles weaken and become shorter, nerves can become trapped and the tension that is placed on the tendons might even cause tendon inflammation or tendonitis. Eventually, all of this leads to a reduced range of motion, loss of strength and pain.”
Scar tissue adhesion can be difficult for other types of therapy to address. ART uses much less pressure, but a lot more tension to tear the adhesion away with less likelihood of damaging healthy tissue. During ART treatment, the patient actively moves the affected structure while the practitioner presses or maintains contact on the injured area. This allows the practitioner to feel the structure as it moves under their contact, so they can effectively treat those restricted muscles, tendons or ligaments. Hemberger reports that ART patients often see results in three to six visits.
