The Visionary Art of Lazarus
A little-known fact about Shulamit Lazarus is her career of over a decade in the art field before her career as a personal transformation specialist and healer. Both her practice and her ar, however, are intimately related.
To Lazarus, personal transformation is all about “waking up.” Lazarus uses imagery through the vehicle of collage in a unique manner that evokes and elicits emotional responses. She states candidly “My pieces are not aimed at being pretty.” However, those who have seen her work call her pieces elegant and deeply powerful. And just when you think you know the piece you realize as you look at it again, that there is something hidden in it that you didn’t see the time before.
Lazarus’s art is at once surrealistic as well as visionary. It transcends conventional reality while at the same time speaks of a questionable collective reality that our assumptions and beliefs continue to foster and hasten. “The mission of my art is to wake people up to the beliefs and assumptions that unconsciously govern them and keep them in their comfort zone,” says Lazarus. “My pieces are meant to make people feel and question.”
Lazarus’s pieces will be on view at the Montclair Art Museum Yard School Gallery from March 29 and running through May 4.
